M41 question 444-544

It sounds like you have a "D" overdrive and if so you should see the word "DRAIN" next to 1 of the 3 plugs and is used for draining the O/D.

Don't mess with the other 2 plugs.

VFH refers to the filter screen plate on the side of a "D" O/D and that its not a bad idea to check and clean the filter, but you should have a new gasket in case it tears when you remove the plate or be prepared to make a new one as it is a simple gasket. If you do go into the filter area, make sure to find, clean and reuse the magnetic ring(s) and rubber seal under the filter.

I also agree with VFH as I use 30 wt oil only in all of my customers M41 transmissions.

FYI, there is no fill hole/plug for the O/D. The O/D gets its oil through a passage between the transmission and the O/D so you have to add oil via the fill plug on the side of the transmission.
