Repairing an external mirror 1800

Hello, I have a '72 1800es and the mirror on the drivers door broke were the two parts are joined together by an internal spring. It would seem that on the mirror part there is a 'finger' that holds the end of the spring from the part mounted on the door. does anyone know if there is a 'fix' to this problem shy of replacing the entire mirror. Thanks JC
