1974 speedometer cable clamp 140-160

The original clamp under the car that keeps the cable away from the exhaust does not fit over the side of the replacement cable spring. The diameter of the new cable spring is too large.
I installed the clamp forward of the spring to keep it away from the exhaust but when I tested it the speedometer cable seems to not seat properly in the cluster side and began to make a clicking sound intermittently.
I disconnected it. Tooth moves freely when not connected. Not sure if I need to bend the clamp to fit and clamp the spring from the side or if the cable is binding for some other reason. I lubricated the cable with graphite type lubricant. Do I need more or a different type of lubricant?
Wondering what the order is for connecting the cable also. Do I need to connect both ends before securing the clamp and firewall clamp?
