Do I need a new muffler 700

It's a 1990 740 gl 4 cylinder I can turn the whole caddalic converter with my hand and one side of pipe has split marks where it looks like it was pieced together .maybee muffler tape and I know I need a new tail pipe my old one was bent for a long time still is .the real question is should I try to do it myself or get the experts to do it. Dose the muffler have to be super tight or can it leak a little air?
