I asked my State Farm agent how to go about getting a policy more appropriate for one of my old Volvos and was told the same thing. Get an appraisal.
When I told my State Farm agent that I was canceling my policy and going with another company, the agent IMMEDIATELY offered to write me a policy for $20,000 on the car, without any requirement for the appraisal. Having been insured by State Farm for more than 30 years and with multiple vehicles plus two houses, I was irked that they wouldn't have made this offer the first time I asked. The quote he came up with was still higher than what Hagerty had already offered, and the restrictions were much more limiting. Never drive to work. Never drive to the grocery store. Never drive to the movies. No more than X number of miles per year. Hagerty's requirements were that it not be my primary car and that it be kept in a secure garage. Easy choice.
We now have 3 vehicles with Hagerty. Rate for the car are about 1/3 of what State Farm was charging; rates for the old bikes are about 1/4.
Best,
Cameron
