Exhaust manifold replacement 900

Hi All,
Been a few years. 92 940 exhaust manifold is now off and I am pondering what to use and how to tidy up the mating surfaces of the head and manifold? Significant carbon build up on inner portions of both, and want to ensure a good/clean mating surface without marring either. Thoughts?
PS, 6 out of 8 studs came right out of the head upon turning the nut. That's a 1st for me. Its usually more like 1 out 8 in my experience. So far....so good.
