And, to be forthcoming, I do what I heard was called the VW trick to get the AC belt off. Just as you (Dave) describe, a screwdriver derails the belt, only I use a ratchet to turn the crank bolt and not my remote starter switch. :-)

But some of the things I do don't really fit the new mechanic's toolbox. They depend on a lot of experience and comfort with mechanisms capable of all manner of injuries.

This is just a quicker way to do it given I already know where the bolts are that allow the AC compressor to be loosened.
