Restoration of 164 Rear Trim 140-160 1972

I am restoring a 1972 164E.

The rear license plate lamp and the trim rings around the tail lights are a faded yellow/clear. I was thinking these were originally "chrome like" plastic and was looking at sending them in for vacuum metalizing but then thought I should ask.

Since this car predates my birth, can any one tell me, when NEW, what was the finish of these parts?

Thanks
Todd
