240 cranks, runs briefly, surging idle 200

Hello all. Having had surging idle with undercharging alt. I replaced it and the battery, timing belt, water pump while in the shop. Thought all was well for a week, then rough running set in. It's like the entire combustion process would stop, resume, stop, go fine for two miles, etc. Now it will start briefly but runs rough.
Getting gas in small sips? Fuses for pumps are OK. pump whirs at ignition. Rotor and cap are in OK shape. Any ideas? 220,000 or so on this locally famous car, hate to let the public down: )
