1996 960 no start issue 900 1996

960 wagon with about 173k miles. Appreciate if anyone would give me a pointer.

Engine turns over but won't start; first time this happened was in about 45 deg damp weather.
Once started idles very rough.
Once warmed up idle smooths out.
Had it towed twice. Currently sits in garage, and the mechanic wants to replace the fuel pump.

Also noticed that cooling fan acts strangely:
- after the cold, no start, and turned off key, fan came on.
- after a short drive in cool weather (north of Boston) the cooling fan stayed on for a few minutes.

Also noticed strange temp gauge behaviors:
- once, after a s15 minutes local drive needle was in red zone. Normal coolant level.
- shut off warm, turn key to II, temp gauge needle went to normal, stayed there 0.5 second, than jump to red. This was repeatable.
- cold starting, with key in II, needle sweeps to normal (middle) immediately.

Recent work done:

- complete timing belt change
- new injector seals
- new exhaust
- new plugs

Bunch of thanks.
