Air temperature sensor failure? 900 1994

After solving my no spark issue and using the car this past weekend with no issues, when my wife tried to take our daughter to school on Monday the car started, but died shortly after. She said it wouldn't restart. I tried it when I got home from work and it started and would idle, but any throttle would kill it. I ran the obd diagnostics, and the car shuddered and threw me a 1-2-2 (air temp sensor bad/ signal missing). It was 17 degrees F at the time. After idling for about 5 minutes, it warmed up enough (I guess?) to where it would allow me to give it some gas and it revved up like normal.

I don't see anything in the FAQ about the air temp sensor; how often do they fail? Was mine just being ornery because of the cold? Can it/ should it be cleaned or otherwise maintenanced? It's only $50 for a new one, but I'd much rather clean and/or repair the old one if I can. Thanks in advance!

-B
