Greetings all!
I've finally finished putting the suspension back together on my 544, which included a complete rebuild of every suspension component front and rear. Everything is finally back together, but I have a new problem: I can't get the wheels to point in the same direction no matter how much I try to crank on any adjustments.
I replaced the Center rod end links, and it's as though the center rod is now too long. I've tried cranking it down as far as it will go, but the rod ends won't thread in any further. It feels like they are bottoming out. With the ends as tight as possible, there's probably a solid 3/4" of threads still exposed on either side (not including the lock nut). (I counted threads, and one side has 11 exposed, while the other has 9, again not including the lock nut.)
With the wheel turned as far as it can go, one side of the car points in the correct direction, but the other side points straight. It's the same story when turning the wheel the opposite direction as far as it can go (just vise-versa).
Everything seems to point to the center rod, but I'm not sure how to make it any shorter (aside from cutting the end links to make them shorter).
I don't need to get it perfect, but I have to get it sorta close so I can drive it to the alignment shop. With the car the way it is now, I can't drive it at all. (I tried, I didn't get far.)
In retrospect I probably should have measured the center rod length before I took the old ends off for comparison, but alas, I didn't. I also didn't save any of the old parts to see if there was any similarity. I assumed everything would to back together the same way it came apart. I should have known better!
I welcome any and all suggestions.
Thanks as always!
