Hi all--greetings from MN!
The good news: my son's 1991 245 made last week's trip from VA to MN just fine, keeping the both of us (and all of his worldly goods) safe and comfortable for over 1450 miles.
The bad news: two days ago (at about 10*F) while scouting out the route to his new employer, the car quit shifting correctly--no upshift from 2nd to 3rd (or OD). We stopped and checked the fluid; it was at the correct level, but dark (though no burned smell), and surprisingly cold, even after driving around for 45+ minutes. I checked the kick-down cable; it seemed OK (tension, etc.), and moved relatively freely. It didn't look like the adjustment/position had changed either. While driving, kick-down held in 2nd all the way to the red-line (no upshift to 3rd).
That night I did a complete fluid replacement per the procedures in the 7xx/9xx FAQs. During the fluid change, I noticed that the ATF was being pumped out much more slowly than in past changes. The last time I did this on this car, it pumped out 2 quarts in about 20-30 seconds--this time it took almost 2 minutes to pump 2 quarts (in a 65*F garage). Does this indicate problems with the internal pump?
Since then: Yesterday and today the car now upshifts pretty normally from 1st to 2nd to 3rd, but still no OD (FWIW, the OD button on the shifter makes the dash light go on/off, so I'm assuming relay is still OK . . . but understand that the solenoid could be TU). Right now the car is at "Foreign Service" in St. Paul for troubleshooting, but not sure they'll be able to add much to any discussion here . . . .
Not sure son can afford a new trans (or a different car) right now, and first day at new job is tomorrow (FRI). Will it cause any more damage to drive it "as is" for the time being? Are there any other things we should be trying, or is the trans going/gone? If the latter, does anybody know of a good replacement AW-70/L in/near the Twin Cities (and somebody to do the work)?
Thanks in advance!

Oh, depending on how this works out, I may have a set of 5-day-old Michelin X-ICE 3s (195/65-15 on Volvo OEM Draco wheels) for sale . . . .
Thanks again!
