M46 OD Solenoid wiring 200

I've got a wiring discrepancy between my freshly installed M46 and the old one that I'm hoping someone may have some insight into.

The new one came from an '80 242, and it's got the yellow wire attached to one terminal of the solenoid, then a bare copper wire jumping to the other terminal, and then to ground. The original had the yellow wire going to one terminal, then the other connecting to ground.

What gives?
Has anyone seen this first setup?

Also, is there a fixed pos. and neg. on the solenoid, or are they interchangeable? I ask because there are no markings indicating polarity, and the rotational orientation of the poles is different than on the original unit.

Thanks,
