howling sounds from front of '93 940 900

Yesterday my 93 940 wagon, non-turbo, started making a noise I have never heard on any of my cars over the years.
It sounds at times like a 747 engine spooling up.

It APPEARS to be coming from the front of the car, the right front, though noises can be deceptive. Happens first thing in the morning, and when car has warmed up, no difference.

No noise when car is not moving, noise increases in volume and pitch as road speed increases - NOT engine speed, starting around 10mph. If I ease the car into neutral, say at 15mph, the noise is still there.

And the noise is not consistent - one minute it will howl, the next it just sounds like somebody touching a finger to an old-fashioned desk fan.

Trans has plenty of fluid, tires are inflated to spec.

Any guesses? Wheel bearing/hub perhaps, or driveshaft bearing?

Thanks.
