We put new v-belts into our 1984 240. After a few days, we noticed that the inside of the power steering belt, which runs from the AC compressor to the PS pump, was rubbing on the red plastic cap on the AC compressor. I believe that this is the high pressure fitting. The belt has nearly worn through the cap.
The way the PS pump is mounted means that, as the pump is moved back to increase the belt tension and/or to fit a longer belt, the belt moves closer to that red plastic cap. If the belt tension is loosened, the belt start a vibration which lets the belt hit the red cap. Either way I can't find a belt tension which keeps the belt from touching the red cap.
Now the belt I was sold locally was a Gates 13x1080. IPD says it should be 12.5x1075. Years ago, a local Volvo indie put in a 13x1075 which seemed to work fine. Other on-line suppliers list the belt as 10x825, a huge difference.
Now my question is: Can will the 1075mm belt work when the 1080mm is too long?
There is only 5mm difference. The 825mm seems like it would be way too short.
What is the wisdom of the forum?
