I go back and forth on this personally (no 544, though).
Our "race" car is ODBi.5 by GM. Sensor count is about equal to a late 2/7/9 series. Sensor quality is absolute crap.
The motorcycles I worked on all through college area a lot like the 544 (but overhead cam). they had more carbs and an even more simple transmission and clutch arrangement.
Pre ODBII fuel injection takes a different knowledge set but is mostly less complex than a multi-carb set-up. It even has a little box to give you a (occasionally misleading) clue as to where to look.
Electronic ignition is much more confusing than points and condenser. On the plus side, they normally require nothing for over a 100K miles. For Volvo...both systems have their challenges but are SUPREMELY more reliable and most components durable. Confounding at times as the miles top 200K+ miles...yep.
For me, I will take high quality but still relatively simple EFI/electronic ignition over a multicarb, true points ignition any day. Now, modern..really modern...electrical systems with a CANBUS system...ugh, no thank you.
