To Lower or Not to Lower, That is the Question

My bone-stock '85 240DL is as high as the day it left the factory. I'm thinking it looks a tad ungainly and it certainly has a fair bit of body roll in the corners.

I'm thinking of installing a set of IPD lowering springs but have a few questions -
1. will I risk tire-rub in tight turns?
2. can I stay with the stock shocks and struts and strut inserts?
3. What are the pro's and con's of lowering a 240? I don't really want to simply cut a few coils out of the stock springs...but I also don't want to spend a ton of money on this project.
