Vacuum cap for fuel sender unit 200 1990

Good morning! My wife has owned her 1990 240 for 4 years now. In that interval, I have replaced the cap on the unused port of the fuel sending unit 3 times. This car is garaged so my clue is fuel smell which is best appreciated at the left rear wheel well, and sure enough I find a split cap. I tried vinyl once, it didn't last either. I'm thinking of buying a cap that is a bit larger than required and filling it with RTV sealant unless someone has another suggestion. Thanks.
