Auto transmission service? Change filter or not? 900 1993

The fluid in my '93 940's transmission looks and smells like it needs changing. Mileasge is 138,000 - no service info available from previous owner.

I read the notes in the BB FAQ, which state that dropping the pan and swapping the filter are not recommended.

I already got a new filter and pan gasket prior to reading this.

My gut is to go ahead and drop the pan, install the new filter, and then flush out the fluid using the transmission cooler line method.

I would appreciate any feedback or advice here - car is running & shifting well, and I don't want to mess it up.

Thanks!
