odometer out 200 1991

hi sages- 5 years ago i followed advice here from wise brick bruthas who talked me through a repair to the non working odometer. put in two new gears from odometergears.com in va and shook out and blew out the cluster on the bench. the old gears had broken teeth. speedometer always worked fine. removed the button mech on the front of the cluster to avoid using it and breaking the new gears. the odometer started working again and all ok until about a year ago. odometer stops and starts periodically and starts with firm tapping on the cluster. symptoms and advice here point to cracked or separated solder connections, but havent confirmed it yet. will soon take out cluster and confirm suspicion and then probably do a needlepoint solder repair with my soldering gun. magnet motor seems characteristically weak. do not have further suspicions if this fails. feel free to advise.wish they still had cable driven off the trans speedometers instead of these hocus pocus electronic systems with a tone ring and sender off the differential. dealer only wants $800 to fix. sound like a helluva deal? thanks tons oldduke
