960 no power on kick-down 900 1997

My 97 960 (110,000 miles) seems to have lost power when I kick it down at highway speed. The transmission is hard to kick down, and when it does, the rpm shoot up but the car does not accelerate. It sounds like it is accelerating like mad, but the acceleration does not match the rpm. From a dead stop the car goes through all the gears smoothly and as designed, it is just at higher speeds like when trying to pass.
The trans oil is likely original, is not greatly discolored, and does not smell burnt. However, is this something that a full flush might correct, or am I looking at the AW30 dying?
Thanks
John D.
