So, she's staying the summer.
It bothers me about the CEL/code discrepancy. And reminds me of a trouble recently thought to be solved on my grandson's '90, which had a similar, intermittent stall symptom.
I found the fuel ECU's connector could be re-seated to fix it. Well, that does the same thing lifting the fuse does -- wipes out the memory, so I didn't give it much concern until just touching the plug made it stall.
The ECU that was in there was marked with yellow yard crayon, in addition to being an original vintage -561. The car was purchased from the original owner about 15 years ago, who had dealer maintenance before replacing the car with a C30. I checked my notebook, and there was no indication I had ever swapped the ECU, nor done anything to it. However, I've caught myself before short on the paperwork.
Having a spare, of the later -951, I popped one in, noting the junkyard -561 plug terminals had a crusty white moisture-history look. It has been about 10 weeks now with the -951 and no car-trouble texts. I would not have made the connection between this experience and your '89 except that I think I remember him reporting a CEL without a corresponding CEL-causing code stored. But no note, so in effect, it did not happen.
Of course an ECU swap is just a tad easier to pull off than the TPS. And both are just guesses.
