New (2 me) '90 740 GLE. Concerns. 700 1990

I found a super clean 90 740 GLE; 147k. 2300.00. Bought it.
Perfect Carfax. Lived in Nashville till traded in. Bought in Athens, AL.

Bringing it back the 130 miles to Talladega, wife following on I65 ..puffs of smoke; periodically ...out the back.

Then after some fairly fast freeway driving (75-80; 45 min), get off and there is this whir/whine, noticed slightly earlier in the test drive ...but now louder from under the car. Does it with tranny in neutral, slightly more in D.

Don't know 16v B230 engines at all. Would love to know if I have made a mistake before my check goes through ???

I hope there is an easy button for this. This is one really clean 740. Had to have been garaged most of it's life.

Edit: Just read the balance shaft belt can whine. Will get that checked.
What else might I be looking for. Thanks.
