Catalytic converters 900 1997

Your 1997 Volvo 900 series ....

Well, whaddya got? Let's presume the inline-six white block dual overhead cam B6304 as a Volvo S90 (saloon) and Volvo V90 (estate). At least what's available across the North American market at the time.

I see, a 1997 Volvo 960 / 90 series as a wagon or estate. I speak and write Commonwealth English, too.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_900_Series

Your 90-series comes equipped with some different engine, as in a grey market import? You may have the smaller displacement I-6 B6244 or B6254 engine? (Smaller diameter bore, we hope, yes? More footprint meat between the block and head.) I'll guess you have the largest displacement served up in in the North American market, the B6304.

At any rate you have what is called, in US DOT speak, OBD-II, an engine control (or management) system that uses two 02 (oxygen) sensors in the exhaust. One 02 sensor before the catalytic converter and one 02 sensor after. If a Canadian-market 900 series, most likely comes equipped with active or more so, passive, Pulse AIR (air [into the exhaust manifold] injection reaction [for cleaner emissions]).

The 02 sensors before and after the catalytic converter measure how well catalytic converter performs the scrubbing of superheated exhaust gasses by how much oxygen difference between catalytic converter exhaust input and output. Your 960 / 90 series engine uses a finer trim control than those with the Bosch LH/EZK. I'll guess it is the Bosch Motronic engine control (fuel, ignition, emission) control on your 1997 900 series.

If you mean to delete the catalytic converter, you may need to consider how engine control (or management) will work. You may want to consider a replacement engine control system. I'll guess what is called Megasquirt or a competitor, EFI, and a few others. You prior post indicates you want your Volvo 900 series to go faster.

Yet as you are in British Columbia, Canada, both the Provincial and Canadian federal governments may restrict what you can do with your 1997 Volvo 90 series should you want to continue to use it with such modification. The stock (Bosch Motronic) OBD-II engine management won't work at all well if you remove a healthy catalytic converter and will throw CEL (check engine light) dash light illuminating fault codes.

I'm not certain, yet I believe, across all Canada, engine emissions are checked by plugging the emissions inspection (smog test) site into the cable port you use to check for OBD-II fault codes. They may further perform visual inspection of emissions controls. So, you may not be able to apply such modifications to your 1997 Volvo 90 series. I'm not sure. Check the applicable local and national codes, if you want to drive it on the public streets. Though emissions in Canada may merely use a gas analyzer up the tail pipe. I dunno.

If you want to merely use an often-touted engine performance upgrade of a larger diameter exhaust pipe, with a catalytic converter that has larger diameter ports, you can do this, if you can find such advertised.

Like I wrote before, other than the Canadian Pulse AIR, bringing fresh air into the exhaust, the Volvo 90 series is down-tuned at the engine control ECU for reduced emissions for as mandated by the North American auto market. Or it may use a different ECU computer box. You may be able to acquire the factory parts from a 1997-98 90 series that was sold in Europa for sale, yet the wire harness may be different, and engine control sensors, and a host of other issues, may limit what you can do, or cost you a pile of money.

A search for 960 /90 series performance upgrades using your fave search engine may turn up something. Verify legal compliance for auto emissions and safety for you location and nation.

As your 960 / V 90 very likely has one of the auto transmission slush boxes, if you want some bang, take out the slush box, and install the mighty M90 5-speed manual transmission.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_M90

Unless you don't like manual transmissions. You may well have to go to Europa for that. Flywheel, M90 transmission (the right and best one!), mount, drive shaft, and great bog with his angels in heavens only knows. You may get lucky. Or, with some fabrication, a transmission from a late model Toyota Surpra.

Or drop a big fat American V-8 in it. SuperCharge it. Add nitrous!

The 960 / 90 was sold in small numbers. You may not find much support nearly twenty years out, as you can with the redblock four cylinder rear wheel drive Volvos to this day, though that support fades fast.

Also, check you boob tube for 960 / S and V 90 videos for maintenance and modding ideas. Maybe hotter cams with higher lift, longer duration with higher emissions output, maybe.

The 960 / 90 is an awesome yet fickle bitch. Either get it to stage 0 tuning by replacing wear items [t-belts, suspension bushes], fluids, and such) and get the thing back on a maintenance schedule, or, if you can, take it off road, after you've researched and fomented strategy to blow the thing with performance upgrades to suit your needs as your wallet and regulatory controls allow.

Some links for you using "960 performance" as the search phrase in Google.

Questions?

Hope that helps.

"Another United States Memorial Day: Give thanks for those that died or maimed in illegal wars for U.S. Corporate Profits or American facism, like the Paul Wolfowitz or Bush / Clinton / Obama-Soterro doctrine.

When the citizen-soldier returns to U.S. soil, the Corporation gets the profits, the eventual veterans get garbage, disrespect, no care, and are ultimately discarded.

All heil the American Corporate Wall Street Share Holder above all. Here come Billary or Trump in another NEO election. Thanks to the STUPID U.S. citizenry.
