Timing gears 444-544

It's been so long I forgot my password. I am replacing the timing gears in my b20 powered 544. The new fiber gear is smooth with a key hole inside the donut hole. The old one has teeth one of which one is broken. I have teeth on the end of the shaft. I can see a key hole. It appears that it separated as nothing else makes sense. Am I right? If so, how do I remove what is still on there? I should have known something was up when the gear came off so easy. Thanks in advance.
