Had fly by night mechanic replace front struts 200

I had a fly by night guy change out my front struts. Now the strut shaft extends too far out so the dust caps don't fit. And the struts clunk because the nut is tightened down all the way and is at the end of the threads.

New true mounts but KYB not OEM Volvo

What did he do wrong and what should I do to correct it. Don't want to take it back to him because he doesn't know what he is doing
