B18 Timing gear replacement 120-130

derek, From your post responding to Phil's post it appears you are still some what confused. Every time the the 0 degree mark on the crank pulley comes around to line up with the hash mark on the timing cover both #1 and #4 are at TDC - alternating between compression and exhaust. If the #1 cylinder happens to be on compression stroke when you remove the cover you'll see the hash mark on the cam gear is 180 degrees away from lining up directly opposite the timing mark on the crank gear. If you are replacing the gear because it is broken and the motor is completely out of time -- set the crankshaft so the timing mark on the crank gear is facing the cam gear and then rotate the cam till it is in position to install the cam gear with its mark directly in line with the crank gear's mark. I mark the edge of each tooth on either side of the cam gear hash mark with yellow tire marking crayon--that way I know the correct teeth are lining up with the mark on the crank gear. -- Dave
