1989 780 - ran fine, now low idle, smoke, no accel 700 1989

My daughter was driving home from a play with her friend Satruday night, and her car just sputttered and dies. It has been running fantastic for the past year - starts great, lots of power, smooth and wonderful.

I go out to meet her on the side of the road, and start the car- it starts quick, but the idle is way low- 400 or so, lopey, and there is tons of rich smelling smoke. Throttle does very, very little - flooring it will produce and extra 100-200 RPM, and it runs rougher.

Half tank of gas, no fluids dripping or low. Full tune up 6 months ago - rotor, cap, timing belt, air filter, and nothing done recently (well, messed around with the AC blower, but nothing else). I never changed the fuel filter (previous owner swore it had been done) but symptoms feel wrong for that.

Any idea whats wrong? I'm going to rent a tow dolly this afternoon, but then will be scratching my head.

Thanks-
-rj
