Looking for cause intermittent stall/no start 700 1989

My 89 sedan has been sitting at a mechanic's for 3 weeks while he
starts it once or twice a day and watches it run fine. I had it towed there because I didn't trust it. The last time I drove it on a Friday night date with my girlfriend, driving to a movie, it stalled and would not restart. She called a friend, went home, while I waited 2 hrs for a tow. End of a date with someone I get to see only once or twice a week. Whining aside, the next morning, it started right up. After that, I was able to duplicate the problem one more time in my driveway. No start after stall, then would eventually restart. I have pulled, and closely examined, the fuel pump relay. It looked fine. I'm looking for thoughts, because my mechanic is at a loss, and I need to solve this and get my car back. Thanks ahead for brilliant ideas!
