SU needle replacement 120-130

Good day all
I recently purchased an SU carb repair kit as well as new metering needles. I have replaced the jets, float bowl needles and seats as well as the floats. I tried to loosen the screws holding the needles in place in the pistons but cant get them loose. I don't want to apply too much force and break the heads of the screws off so am just using the car as is with the old needles.
Has anyone ever had this problem and how did you resolve it? I think it is "varnish" that has hardened preventing the screws from being loosened.
Any help or advice will be appreciated.
Thank you.
