Here's my dilemma: Our '89 244 we've had since new is sitting at 189,000 miles. Always good service; car looks new. Never had struts or rear shocks....yet. I think it's time. I have a pair of NOS KYB 4-way adjustable struts that I bought some 12+ years ago when they were discontinued. I used a set in our '81 245 - work fine. I'm 73 years old and quit doing much on our Volvos except oil changes. We live in a VERY rural area, but have a good, honest general mechanic. Not exactly a Volvo guy. If I buy name brand parts myself, (which he never has trouble with, but, of course, cannot guarantee), then I better get the right stuff or I'll end up with struts that should've had a spacer, so clunk after all the labor is paid for. (Or the opposite, and/or will need to be re-done), or something won't fit. And I don't know that my KYB's are still good after sitting new in box for this long, or if they're a drop in fit for the '89.
SO - this is touchy, but I wonder if NAPA parts are really any good. If I just have him get everything through NAPA, he'll make sure it all fits, etc. No extra cost to me if something is wrong part or fails. Car has IPD sway bars, but we don't need a road-racer when finished. Just near to original equipment or better.
I would never consider this if we had a good Volvo mechanic, I were younger, or...etc. I used to buy heavily from IPD, RPR, etc. Name stuff.
Thoughts?
