Gremlins in the fuel system... 200 1989

Sages,

My 1989, 240 DL, 346K miles on clock, left my son sit on the side of the road today, actually about an hour ago.

I was only a few miles away so he called and I showed up.

Sure enough the car would not start, turn over - yes, but not start.

I got down and had him turn the key on but not start it while I felt the fuel pump. I felt nothing, so I deduced that the fuel pump relay was to blame.

I then went home and pulled another fuel pump relay out of my working 1991, 240 and returned with an alligator clip as well in case it didn't work and I needed to jumper the pump to get it to work.

So I get back and try the jumper first, fuse 4 to 6, and had him crank the car. It started right up. Cool I thought. Then I went and placed the known good relay in the car and told him to start it. It would not start no matter what.

So I jumper it again and drive it home.

I then test both relays on my working 91 and the car starts both times.

So... What have I missed that the car starts and runs when jumpered but will not when I put the relay in place.

I need help ASAP as I need this car on the road by Tuesday!

Thanks in advance,

Matt
