940 Questions: 900

Dear Hugh,

Hope you're well. 940s were marketed in North America from 1991 through 1995.

Only 1994 and 1995 models had dual airbags

1993 and later models had R134a refrigerant.

Note also, that 1995 speedometer is unique to that year (and to later 960s); 1993 and 1994 speedometers will interchange, but not with 1991 and 1992 cars.

Try to get maintenance records, at least those that show oil changes were done at least as often as Volvo specified.

Transmission fluid (ATF) should be a clear, rosy red. Brown/black ATF - a sign that fluid changes have not been done - bespeaks neglect. Orangey / pale pink fluid suggests overheating. Cloudy/milky fluid shows that water has entered the ATF, because the in-radiator ATF cooler has failed. Water dissolves glue that adheres tranny clutch pack facings: microfibers will clog transmission fluidways and greatly shorten the transmission's service life.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
