May have solve one problem but now have another on 544 444-544

Did you use a new gasket? - those metal rims around the cylinders may only seal once as they are crushed when you torque down the head.

One way to avoid SOME problems with large jobs would be to read a procedure from a manual - even the procedure for a head gasket change for another model of car would give you some tips, like disconnecting the battery, draining the coolant, and how to treat your rocker arms and pushrods.

I would only put water, and perhaps some conditioner in the engine until I got the cooling right. then I would flush it and install antifreeze.

Do you have a 544 manual? I got a copy of one from Swedish Treasures, and another on ebay. I also have an old Floyd Clymer manual from ebay. I am sure others are available.

I have also read several manuals from cover to cover, they often have tips on problems that might pop up.

I would not be very happy with the gasket's fit - did you check it on the bottom of the head as well?

I DO admire your - roll up your sleeves and dig in - attitude.
