May have solve one problem but now have another on 544 444-544

Something's really weird. As stated, the thermostat should certainly have opened while the car was idling.

Re: opening up the coolant holes in the gasket: this will not help. Odd as it seems, the holes in the gasket are intentionally smaller/different than the openings in the block. Making them larger decreases the cooling system's efficiency.
