airbag procedures 200 1993

"The SRS / airbag uses a motion sensor / controller, that keeps a charge for up to 30 or 90 minutes after you disconnect the battery. (You MUST disconnect the battery, and you have that large terminal junction on the positive battery post.)"

Hey Kitty, or should I call you Mr. Safety, where did you read that?

The way I understand it, the airbag is unpowered mere seconds after you turn off the key. Your quote warning isn't harmful, but it would waste a lot of time in my opinion.

I know Bentley says to disconnect the battery, and that's good, but no part of the SRS gets power when the key is in your pocket. And the capacitor designed to keep it powered during a crash only holds energy enough for a few seconds.

The thing to remember (airbag comes out with two screws) is don't turn the key on while the airbag is out (plug disconnected) or the controller will set a code needing to be cleared. Since the horn does require the key to be on, testing the horn button with the airbag removed will complicate the reinstallation, requiring the code clearing procedure.

Best advice for the OP is to get the Bentley book. No one wants to be responsible for misguiding or a misinterpretation of good guidance. May not be in time for inspection though.
