Your M47 failure anecdotes please 200 1991

I'm trying to determine whether my M47 is living on borrowed time.

I ignored a leaking tailshaft seal and ran the trans pretty low. I'm not sure how long this neglect went on, probably quite a while.

It's now filled with as much redline MTL as I can get in, but I have some noise in every gear but 4th.

The noise in 1,2 and 3 is most noticeable under load. The noise in 5th is pretty faint compared to road noise.

Questions:
1) For those with noise in 1,2 and 3, how long did you go between the noise starting and (a) swapping the trans or (b) transmission failure?

2) What is the failure mode? Is it safe to drive until it blows up?

3) The most economical swap seems to be another M47. With a little more work, an M46 is possible. What are the pros and cons of an M47 vs M46 with OD?

Thanks!
