92 240 loud scraping sliding sound while starting. Starts eventually. 200 1992

Hmmm. Something doesn't "sound" right about this branch of the thread.

I hear the way the scraping sound is described and I don't hear the screech of a starter drive failing to mesh with a worn spot on a ring gear -- unless ... unless you are letting the key go and trying it again to cause it to "eventually" start.

No, what I "hear" is the starter drive (also called an overrunning clutch in mechanic speak) is worn, but the small gear on it is meshing with the ring gear on the flex plate OK. When the rollers in the drive fail to grab fully, the scraping noise continues as you crank until the engine runs.

Anyway, since I can't hear it (unless you post a youtube or something) I can't say Bob is on the wrong track here, but Phil's test of that should work to rule it out. The crank bolt is 24mm or 15/16".

If it turns out to be what I hear, the part that fails looks like this, but the usual and ordinary service is to replace or have the starter rebuilt.
