Spacer under cam pulley? 200 1987

I'm putting a 1987 motor into a 1991 (who knows if the motors had been changed before => who knows what years they are.)

In swapping the cam, distributor, and main pulleys from the 1991 to the 1987 (the 1991s look less worn), I found a ~100,000th spacer (teardrop-shape to match the pin) under the cam pulley.

Bentley mentions "place the cam spacer under the pulley" in the cam-seal replacement section. But doesn't mention years or say "if the motor has one".

The cam pulleys seem the same thickness, offset; and with the spacer under the pulley on the 1987 motor the cam pulley visually lines up with the other two.

I don't remember seeing a spacer before. Perhaps an aftermarket cam has a thinner end journal? Or the motor in the 1987 is a B23 (I haven't worked on one in years).
