Hi yellowbrickroadster,
I did not know Volvo still offers the windshield glass for 240.
I'm unsure any difference between the two windshields by era:
-> 1990 with the trim - http://www.volvopartswebstore.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_product=1106389&ukey_assembly=234203
1991-> Flush mount
Flush mount from the factory also used a roll of butyl tape that cam in different diameters.
The 3540054 windshield may be a single piece of glass, or may be more like the modern, made in China glass, that includes a plastic trim with groove recess on the exterior side where the (I guess) 3540053 cover moulding secures to it. You can no longer buy butyl tape from Volvo.
You may be able to use a windshield with the plastic border, though you'd have to remove the plastic border without damaging the glass.
I also cannot find replacement -1990 clips that secure to the windshield and the other clips that press into the interior side of your 1980 trim to which you secure the trim to the to the clips on the windshield. You want all new clips as these fail from exposure.
Another issue who will install the windshield with the 1980 trim you want? Windshield installers no longer use butyl tape. For some vintage care owners, or some vintage cars with rust repair, that's a problem. Modern windshield installation use the urethane adhesive sealant. To use urethane, the installation must wholly remove all trace of butyl rubber, right down to the paint in the windshield pan pinch weld.
If you reveal any sort of rust or you want to prevent rust from forming, you would treat and seal the surfaces, paying particular attention to the drain holes at other side. I believe in your 1980 you can remove the vent plate below and in front of the windshield to treat the area. I'm not sure.
You can ask the windshield installer use the clips, as they would secure them to the windshield. The urethane sets quickly.
I have a 1992 240 GL where I had to replace the previous windshield, that was a replacement, with a Pilkington (all made in Chinese JUNK) brand. Had the plastic border. I used butyl tape from Volvo and spacers at the bottom. The moulding that clips to the plastic border never remained in the border. It flew off down the highway. I may have it someplace. I used goop and other glue and it would not stay one. So, I pulled a black trim piece from an 80s GL that I mean to install after I remove the plastic border of the installed windshield, bit my bit. Of the windshield installs I've done myself, this one is off kilter, favoring the right side and it rests to low in the pan. I've neglected it for years. Oh well.
So, some more research on your part.
Questions?
Hope that helps.
MacDuff.
