Fuel pump woes 444-544

A year or so ago I restored my '65 544 with B 18 and had the glass bowl type fuel pump rebuilt. 3 weeks ago with less than 1000 miles on it I was left high and dry. Being close to home I was able to gravity feed the carbs from a small container and got home. Fuel gauge was showing 1/4 tank, so I filled up but the pump output stayed dry.
Last week I fitted a new Swedish built metal pump and went for a ride. In 10 miles it had stopped pumping.
Gas gauge was showing 1/3 tank but to be safe I added the 1.5 gal from the mobile tank I carry. AAA to the rescue!
Today I ran it on the mini tank then checked the tank sender - OK, and 4.5 " of gas in the tank.
When I removed the fuel pump it was squirting gas as I rocked it while getting it out and it seems normal.
Any ideas on what is going on?
