Engine dies while driving, wait 2 minutes, starts, runs and drives fine

I need help, because the problem I'm having could end up killing me if it happens on the freeway where I can't get over to the side of the road. Here are the symptoms -
1. 50K miles on the car. It's been well maintained.
2. While driving (and this morning twice, while accelerating) the engine dies. Fortunately in both instances I had enough momentum and traffic was light enough that I could coast into a parking lot.
3. When I try to start the car immediately, it turns over, but does not start. After waiting about a minute it starts and runs fine.

I'm guessing the first thing to try is a new fuel filter. Is there a fuel filter for the pump inside the gas tank?

Any other recommendations for what to trouble shoot?
