What the heck... Almost running 200 1987

Hello, again. I will try to attach a recording of my engine turning over , eventually catching, then sputtering, running poorly for a few seconds, all the while sounding like it was knocking or backfiring , before stalling again. . Both pumps work, the sender doesn't , but the gauge responds when I jump the grey wire to ground back by the tank. I wil take the sender/pump out to check the float, etc, when I have a chance, I changed the relay under the glove compartment, and checked all fuses. Also put in a new flame trap. All of its tubes seem to be attached properly. I get fuelmat the regulator. The plug wires weren't mover since it ran last, which was right after my replacing both fuel pumps and the filter, then it ran well for a few miles as I drove it to be inspected when it quit. Seems like I heard a sound like a twig caught against the wheel for a mile or so just before it quit. I found no twig.
Why would make it run this way that could have come on so quickly? Thanks. I can't figure out how to attach the .m4a file from my iPhone. Sorry.
