SU carbs 142 140-160 1971

I have a 71' 142 with dual carbs.Recently, it seemed that the throttle cable was not having much effect. Shortly after, had the blow -by from the oil cap run into the air filter box instead of the small air filter on top of the oil cap (which was blowing ALOT of oil all over the engine!). Shortly after, idle seemed to increase. After taking a look, I see that one of the choke cables is not attached to anything. Just cable wire sitting there. Don't know if the choke linkage fell off along the road or if it has never been there. Or if the issue has something to do with the blow-by being changed. Now of course, I have started messing with the iddle adjust and everything is going haywire. Idle too high, idle too low, wanting to stall at stops or when it gets good and warm. HELP!!
