What is the trick to a properly adjust hood latch mechanism?

The hood doesn't pop up when the latch release lever is pulled. I can get it opened and I have figured out how to get it to pop up when the latch release is pilled but the hood doesn't seems to sit right when the hood is down.

If I press down on the hood there is a lot of play even though it is secure.

Is there an adjustment procedure for this?
