My friend, who works on and builds $80K hot rods is not a big fan of aftermarket electronic ignition systems. He does say that they do have some great benefits.

On his cars that have such systems, he asks the owners to carry a good conventional distributor and parts needed to re-install it. Many people who have converted carry the old system.

Most mechanics can get a conventional ignition system to work, but if an electronic system craps out, you are toast.

If you do intend to cary the old distributor, get to up to snuff before you remove it, and have some marks that will allow you to put it back so that it will start - you can tune it by hand after you get the car running.
