Exhaust Disconnection Makes Engine Rev High - Why? 200

Hi Folks,

My 245s exhaust disconnected while driving due to my make shift repair. Proper repair is in works.

The incident made me wonder about the relationship of the 02 sensor and motor RPM...

The exhaust disconnected about 6" behind the 02 sensor while driving on the highway, disconnecting in front of the cat and muffler. The motor immediately went into super high rpms. Roaring. I had to turn the key off and coast to the side of the highway. No traffic around, so no worries getting off. Restarted the car and it ran OK, albeit with a straight exhaust, so I limped up to a nearby rest area and got towed home.

Why did the motor suddenly lock on high rpms when the exhaust pipe came off?

Feedback change from the 02 sensor?

Could an exhaust leak near the 02 sensor give OBD codes?

FYI: The exhaust is a Unitek header using a custom pipe (with 02 bung) connecting to a cat, then stock turbo pipe single muffler exhaust. Worked well until rust attacked.

Curious minds need to know.

Bert
