Gentlemen,
Thanks for all your great advice, all was tested or replaced as suggested. After reading some additional threads, the other possibility was a failing ECU. When I looked behind the passenger footwell panel, I found the notorious Bosch pink labeled 561! Ordered a replacement from eBay, plugged in the new upgraded Bosch 951 unit as brickboard suggested, and suddenly, all my issues were resolved. Problem solved, well done fellow Brick enthusiasts. My friend who bought the car in non-driving condition, drove away with his new 240 last evening. He texted me this morning, we have a new convert!
