1989 Volvo 740 stranded in WV

I have some guys from the LeMons rally with a 1989 740 wagon stuck in Elkins, WV. These are Volvo guys...just guys doing a 1500 miles road trip with a lot of other like-minded idiots and they happenned to pick a cheap Volvo for their stead.

Yesterday morning they had no spark and narrowed it down to the power stage on their own. Today, they have spark at the coil wire but none to the plugs. This is a head mounted distributor. They did find a lot of gunk (assumed bad o-rings and possibly clogged flame trap) in the dizzy which they cleaned out.

All I could come up with is the infamous too-short coil wire or the distributor button being bad/burned/worn out.

Any other ideas.
